Overview

The Marangu Route is the only route on Mount Kilimanjaro that offers hut accommodations instead of camping. It is often considered the easiest route, but the shorter itinerary allows less time for acclimatization.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to Moshi Town (or Arusha). Attend a pre-trek briefing and gear check. Stay overnight in a hotel in Moshi.

Day 2: Marangu Gate (1,860m) → Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain: 840m
Terrain: Rainforest

Start the trek at Marangu Gate after registration. Hike through a lush rainforest with towering trees and a variety of wildlife, including blue monkeys. Reach Mandara Hut by the evening, where you'll rest overnight. Optionally, visit Maundi Crater for beautiful views of Kenya and Northern Tanzania.

Day 3: Mandara Hut (2,700m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Elevation Gain: 1,020m
Terrain: Rainforest → Moorland

Continue through the rainforest into heath and moorland. The landscape opens up, revealing stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Horombo Hut, a large camp with great sunset views. Stay overnight here.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Kibo Hut (4,703m)

Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Elevation Gain: 983m
Terrain: Alpine Desert

The trek gets tougher as you enter the alpine desert. Pass the famous Saddle, a barren stretch between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Kibo Hut, rest early, and prepare for the summit push at midnight.

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4,703m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 6 km (ascent) + 16 km (descent)
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours (ascent) + 5–7 hours (descent)
Elevation Gain: 1,192m
Elevation Loss: 2,175m
Terrain: Arctic → Alpine Desert → Moorland

Start hiking around midnight. Pass Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m) and Gilman’s Point (5,681m). After a tough climb, reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Enjoy sunrise and breathtaking views. Descend back to Kibo Hut, then to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Marangu Gate (1,860m) → Moshi

Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Elevation Loss: 1,860m
Terrain: Moorland → Rainforest

A long descent back through the lush rainforest. Receive your summit certificates at Marangu Gate and return to Moshi for a celebratory dinner and rest at your hotel.

Day 7: Departure or Optional Activities

Transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or extend your stay for a safari in Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or Zanzibar beaches.

Key Tips for Success

Hydrate well by drinking 3-4 liters of water per day. Go slow (“Pole Pole”) to aid acclimatization. Dress in layers as temperatures range from humid to freezing. Prepare for altitude sickness and consider taking Diamox. Pack snacks and energy bars for the final ascent.
